McCain versus the Planetarium. October 10, 2008

Posted by webmaster in : Astro News, Astro News & Commentary , trackback

Watch out; Astroguyz is about to get partisan. In the most recent presidential debate, McCain ridiculed Obama’s proposal to fund a new projector for the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois to the tune of 3 million… catch the blow by blow here. Never mind that this wasn’t for a simple vis-vis overhead projector, but a complete remodel and state of the art digital projector for the facility…I’d like to see  the Air Force install toilet roll holders in its overpriced new tanker fleet for less! As a searcher out of local planetariums, we here at Astroguyz find it a travesty that most of them still show videos older than High School Driver’s Ed, or the grainy, black and white “Your Period and You…” that the school nurse was required to show once a year. Seriously, these kids are growing up on Iron Man and Harry Potter… science education needs to keep up with show business. Why not get Spielberg or Lucas into the planetarium production act? Currently the cinema at local mall is light years ahead of the nearest planetarium. Its sad to think that science funding and education will always be the first to get the ax… what happened to the education initiative of the Apollo era? Do we really want to bow out of the global technological race? Or is a “we’ve got the bombs” mentality enough? I guess the story of the Bear DNA was getting old… but when you attack astronomy, this vet takes it personal. For the Adler Planetariums’ stance, check out this link.
