Astro Event of the Week; November 10th-16th; The Launch of STS-126.

One of the very few remaining shuttle launches will be occurring this week; STS-126 is scheduled to launch on November 14th at 7:55 P.M. EST (yes, another spectacular night launch!) and dock with the ISS on Day 3.

The orbiter is Endeavour , and mission highlights will include movement of over 14,000lbs of cargo via the massive Leonardo module, which will be temporarily attached to the ISS during the orbiters’ stay. It’s always cool to see the STS and ISS perform their ballet shortly before or after docking; check Heavens-Above for local passage times!

This week’s Astro-word of the week is perigee. This is simply the closest approach to the Earth (hence the gee) in an objects’ elliptical orbit. Cool fun fact; during its orbit, the shuttle has a typical perigee of 150 miles above the surface of the Earth!
