Astro-Vid Of the Week: Watch the Trailer for Europa Report

(Courtesy of Magnolia Pictures).

The indie film season is almost upon us.

August occupies the entertainment realm betwixt the summer blockbusters and the holiday shopping season flicks. It’s also time to track down those indie gems that often pass us by like an asteroid occultation in the night.

One such film that we’ve been anticipating is Europa Report. Directed by Sebastián Cordero and starring Sharlto Copley and Embeth Davidtz, the film is already generating a buzz, drawing comparisons to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2009 indie flick Moon.

Europa Report deals with a crewed mission to explore Jupiter’s large icy moon, of the same name. This world is on every planetary scientist’s short list for exploration as a possible abode for life in our solar system. Though its surface is bombarded with intense radiation, all evidence provided by the Voyager and Galileo flybys indicate the presence of a liquid water surface kilometres below the ice.

Anyhow, we thought it would be fun to feature the teaser trailer as this week’s astronomy video pick;

Many have already seen Europa Report via advance offering for purchase on Amazon Instant Video and ITunes. We’ve held off for the big screen when it releases next week on August 2nd. Call us old fashioned, but we feel there’s still something to be said for catching worthy flicks on the Big Screen. And while we agree that early digital release is a boon for small indie films, we still like to “vote with our wallet” at the box office.

Whether you catch it online or at the box office, be sure to check out Europa Report!
