Astro-Vid Of the Week: Catch the Launch of LADEE!

LADEE at Wallops, ready to go! (Credit: NASA EDGE/Franklin Fitzgerald)

On Friday night at just before midnight, history will be made as NASA returns to the Moon with the launch of LADEE, its Lunar Atmosphere & Dust Environment Explorer. †Liftoff is set to occur at 11:27PM Eastern Time/ 3:27 Universal Time on September 7th. LADEE will light up the night sky atop a Minotaur V rocket as it launches out of Wallops Island Virginia. †The launch will be visible for millions of U.S East Coast residents as LADEE streaks out across the Atlantic to cross into sunrise over central Africa.

Canít make it to the launch? The good news is, you can still watch all the action live. NASA TV will be broadcasting the launch from on site starting at 1:30UT/9:30PM EDT the night of the launch:

This will be the first mission to venture from beyond Low Earth Orbit to be launched from Wallops. LADEE has a five minute launch window and backup dates for the launch run from September 8th to the 11th.

LADEE will take 30 days to reach the Moon after a series of leisurely looping elliptical orbits around the Earth. After launch, the hunt will be on as amateur satellite spotters worldwide attempt to catch LADEE and associated hardware in Earth orbit. LADEE will eventually settle into a retrograde orbit 30 miles above the surface of the Moon.

LADEE seeks to characterize the tenuous atmosphere of the Moon. How substantial (or not) is it? What was the source of the ďcrepuscular raysĒ seen by Apollo astronauts during lunar sunrise while in lunar orbit? What is the dust environment of the Moon like in its pristine state?

Be sure to follow LADEE as we head back to the Moon once again!
